@someguy, Perhaps. However, I do not like the idea of not even thinking.

I've been driving on Trafalgar for over a decade. It has no street lights. That's why they invented headlights.

Wonder how well this idea would work in the middle of a winter storm. I'll save you the thinking time. It won't.

bad idea.

We have cat's eyes back home, and they're brilliant for those murky days when you can hardly tell where the lines on the roads are. When I moved here I asked a few people why they don't have them here, and most people seemed to thing that it's because of the winter weather. Pity, they really do work very well.

@SM, Thanks for the comment. Yes, that would be bad.

Lighting sidewalks (since pedestrians do not have headlights) is still a better option than excessive street lights on roadways. I am not suggesting zero lights, I am saying we need to put only what's necessary on roadway (parks, parking lots, sidewalks etc. are all a different story).

I have lived in a town of 40000 in western Canada, where they skimped on the sidewalks and the streetlights, reasoning that everyone would drive everywhere.

What it means is that it isn't as safe for pedestrians and bikers. It keeps people IN their cars, driving 5 blocks for a quart of milk instead of walking. Also in this same town without lights or sidewalks, I first came across the letters AYCE. It took a while to figure out that it stood for All You Can Eat.

My point is, roadways should not be all about cars.
