@Trevor, Yes, I noticed that too, especially with people turning left. It has gotten to a point where I no longer just drive when the light turns green because a few morons decide to keep turning left. I have to wait them all out.

I travel extensively for work, and have spent a lot of time recently in southern California (Anaheim/Orange). One of the things I have noticed is that traffic moves quite quickly through very busy streets. The main thing, is that there is no running of yellow lights. How is this possible? Yellow’s last about 2 seconds then turn red, and there is zero tolerance of running yellows.

A lot of the traffic issues in the GTA are around people rushing through the yellow. How many of us are guilty of seeing the light turn yellow when we are still 20 meters from the light and speed up to get through so that we aren’t stuck on the red?

I have stopped doing this ever since a friend of mine got hit by a car running a red (fortunately no injury). To my chagrin, I have been given the finger, beeped at, sworn at, etc. for simply following the rules. Believe me, I am not a slow driver… but following the law is frowned on.

Unless you are an ambulance, police car or fire truck, there is no reason to run the yellows/reds. It’s pure selfishness… and the last time I checked, those of you doing it are not the most important person in the world.

Actually those speed reducing zones are a good idea, especially near schools and stuff.

It seems to be a never ending story. I’ve blogged about speeding and aggressive driving many times in the past. When I ran for council in 2006, community safety was one of the key parts of my campaign.

Its not enough for more rules and regulations, although its the quickest way to get things done. The better way to solve the problem is to “get” to people and make them realize speeding in a residential area is wrong. Too many people are put at risk because YOU are running behind or even worse, simply careless.

Ive also talked about traffic calming zones that are quite successful in other municipalities being put in place in Milton. As an example, its similar to a speed bump, but more subtle. It still requires the driver to slow down as they go over it, but it can keep the flow of traffic moving.

Many people that I spoke with back then supported an idea like that or simply a reduction in the speed limit in residential areas from 50km/hr to 40km/hr. Its impossible to have the police on every street corner and simply putting up stop signs at everywhere wont solve the problem.

We have to “get” to people…do you “get” it? :)
